The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key role in supporting clinical operations within an occupational health and workers’ compensation medical setting. This position assists providers in delivering high-quality care for workplace injuries, pre-employment and regulatory physicals, drug and alcohol testing, and preventive occupational health services. The MA ensures efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and compliance with applicable federal and state regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Support

  • Room patients and obtain vital signs, medical histories, and injury-related information.
  • Assist providers with evaluations, treatments, and minor procedures, including wound care and splinting.
  • Prepare exam rooms, maintain infection control standards, and ensure appropriate stocking of medical supplies.
  • Perform basic clinical testing as directed (vision, audiometry, spirometry, EKG, etc., depending on clinic services).

Occupational Health & Workers’ Compensation

  • Support care for work-related injuries and return-to-work evaluations.
  • Assist with completion of workers’ compensation documentation, including work status reports.
  • Coordinate employer-directed services such as post-offer physicals, DOT exams, and fitness-for-duty testing.
  • Maintain awareness of OSHA, DOT, and other occupational regulatory requirements relevant to clinic operations.

Diagnostic & Lab Services

  • Collect specimens and perform CLIA-waived testing as applicable.
  • Assist with drug and alcohol screening procedures in accordance with chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Prepare lab samples for processing and shipment as needed.

Administrative & Documentation

  • Accurately document patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and coordinate referrals as directed.
  • Communicate with employers, case managers, adjusters, and third-party administrators regarding patient status when appropriate.
  • Ensure timely processing of medical records, forms, and clinic reports.

Patient Experience & Customer Service

  • Provide compassionate, professional care to patients in a high-volume occupational health setting.
  • Educate patients on treatment plans, clinic procedures, and return-to-work expectations.
  • Maintain a collaborative, service-oriented approach with employers and clinic staff.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) preferred or required per state guidelines.
  • CPR/BLS certification.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in occupational medicine, urgent care, workers’ compensation, or orthopedic settings.
  • Familiarity with DOT physicals, drug screening protocols, and regulatory documentation.
  • Experience using electronic medical record systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong clinical and procedural skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of workplace injury care, workers’ compensation processes, and employer-based healthcare services.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
